Unfortunately this bit of advice is too late for many individuals that have mounting debt and escalating anxiety. Here's what you can do to begin. Set up a budget for yourself. Yes, the feared "b" word. In this budget you will include vital expenses with one addition - an emergency fund.
You will be able to pay off your debt faster and notice a decreasing of the anxiety levels, if you stick to that budget. Imagine the relief and the overwhelming sense of pride once all your debt is gone. Not to mention the absence of the anxiety.
Another cause of stress is working too much. Both you and your family can suffer due to the endless hours at work.
Set up some rules regarding your workplace to help modify this. During the time at your place of employment leave your personal life at the elevator bank. Pick it up on your way out and vice versa. When you leave work don't take any part with you. Make it a rule not to think about work outside of the workplace. When you're with your family, give them your undivided attention. They deserve it.
Another stressor for may people is their inability to say "no". It can be quite stressful to say yes to everyone who demands your aid. When you say yes to too many individuals who ask, you end up not taking care of yourself. It's permissable to say no once in a while. Help others when you can, but don't go overboard.
Limit your assistance to one person at a time. Be mindful of those that are abusive in their calls for help. Family and friends especially. Instruct them to help themselves. It is perfectly OK to expect something from them in return. That will also empower the person you are assisting.
Take on one problem at a time. You can easily buckle under to stress if you extend yourself too thin. It's fine to acknowledge your limitations. Don't over extend yourself.
There are a lot of things that cause stress. Take inventory of your life and discover where your stress is coming from. Then take decisive action to bring down that stress. You may have to alter some habits, you may even have to alter how you respond to things. Diminishing your level of stress should take first place of the order of importance.
